Original reclaimed and refurbished Victorian front door lock of circa 1890.
American made by Russell & Erwin, and popular here because no British locks were available in a decorative style,in it's price range.
The case, keep and key hole escutcheon are of cast iron with engraved decoration to all visible surfaces. The lock is stamped RE U.S.A. around the key hole, the original key is also stamped with the maker.
Operation of the lock, which is accessed from outside by key only,i.e. no knobs to turn.Internally the latch can be retracted by pulling back the sprung loaded brass finger pull (seen left),the key will also retract the latch.
Dead locking is by the key, both externally and internally. There is a double throw action to the bolt on a second turn of the key.
Unusual to find such a complete set in exceptionally good condition, often the keep is missing,or incorrect, the escutcheon rarely seen and the keys usually later replacements.
For right hand fitting.
Lock body measures 5.5/8" x 3.5/8".Keep 1.1/2" wide.
Escutcheon 2.1/4" x 3.5/8".Keyhole 2.1/2" from door edge.
